Addiction & Codependency
Addiction is a disease that can have a profound impact on an individual’s life.
An addicted individual may end up abandoning family, friends, work, or their profession in order to pursue the addiction at hand — whether it be alcohol, drugs, sex, food, gambling, internet, or shopping. One reason many treatments for addiction fail is because addiction treatments are focused on only one aspect of the disease when the whole person needs to be treated for an addiction. With Darin Transformations, we foster a holistic treatment that focuses on the individual as a whole, and treats the addiction at its source, which can be emotional, thought patterns, physical and spiritual, instead of just managing outward symptoms.
What is Addiction?
While many of us think of an addiction as the addict who wakes up each day and turns to food, alcohol, drugs, or whatever their addiction may be to get them through the morning, day, and night—this is not always the case.
A medical diagnosis of addiction involves the display of several behaviors such as:
- engaging more than intended in a certain activity
- being preoccupied with the addiction
- and rearranging one’s life around the addiction
Using these criteria, you can see that even a college student who organizes his or her life around going to the bar a few nights a week could be displaying signs of alcohol addiction, even though it may not be every single minute of their day.
Addiction is also not confined to traditional types of dependence, such as just alcohol and drugs. Many other forms of addiction are beginning to be recognized by the medical community, such as:
- addiction to gambling
- internet use
- sexual activity
A person’s addictions now have a large umbrella that can contain a wide variety of activities because many in the medical community are understanding that it’s a disease a person has which becomes visible through an addiction — not necessarily the activity or substance itself.
Traditional medicine often makes the mistake of treating only a person’s symptoms instead of treating them as a whole person. Symptoms of dependence are only one manifestation of the disease, but making the symptoms go away often leaves the disease to manifest itself simply in another form later on, and leaving the person with an empty void to fill in another way.
Holistic medicine instead uses a mind-body-spirit approach that heals the person as a whole.
At Darin Transformations the addict is assessed for intervention, rehabilitation, outpatient treatment and a 12 step program. The individual is also guided to a proper treatment facility if needed. Those that are not in need of these outside rehabilitation services will be assisted by Linda Darin and her holistic healing services.
Holistic treatment for addiction can be versatile, utilizing a number of different healing modalities. Most approaches entail intuitive council and education regarding addictions. The individual takes inventory of their emotions on a daily basis. Individual services will often be employed to help the addict identify both the personal and social components of their addiction.
Intuitive Counciling may be used to identify childhood contributions to the present-day addiction to learn what caused the disease and how to address through healing. Linda also gives the client spiritual healing tools such as breathing techniques, gratitude journals, affirmations and prayers. These are just a few of the many tools fostered for addiction recovery, whether it be drugs, alcohol, food, sex, internet addiction, gambling or shopping problems.
Guided imagery healing can be especially useful with addiction treatment. By using guided imagery in addiction healing the client can relax and control their addictive urges, and learn to not only cope, but to redirect their addiction into more positive activities and habits, creating a new lifestyle and purpose.
Linda Darin utilizes spiritual healing to bring health back to the individual’s afflicted body energy. In order to rid themselves of the addiction, individuals must re-establish a flow of healthy energy through their bodies, clearing and unblocking chakras, healing their soul and energy. The Darin Method® has been extremely successful for a number of clients to help to accomplish success in the lives of those who have been through the disease of addiction.
Co-Dependency is also addressed for those that feel victimized by the addict. The family members can relate to unhealthy behaviors of the addicted person and are taught to focus on their own healing and personal care for themselves. They learn that they do not need to be in control or be responsible for everything because of feeling everything around and inside them is out of control. They learn to heal and forgive themselves and the addict, release themselves from guilt and be out of the drama triangle. They are offered hope, guidance and spiritual healing assistance.
