Shamanism is the most ancient form of healing, practiced by humans worldwide.
Shamanism is not a religion, in the orthodox sense of the word, but a spiritual practice. The word shaman is derived from the Tungus people of Serbia. A shaman was traditionally an individual offering healing, divination and spiritual guidance to their community. In many cultures initiates are chosen following near-death experiences, profound emotional states and, in some cases, physical abnormalities. Those people often possess, by the simple act of survival, the tools which are utilized in shamanic healing. Accessing those tools, and learning techniques such as entering altered states of consciousness, divination, and connecting with spirits, expand the individual’s perceptions, instincts and knowledge of the human condition. Thus the wounded not only heal themselves, but use those experiences to heal others.
Through a change in consciousness, Shamans enter “non-ordinary” reality to request healing and advice from compassionate animals, humans and other spirits. Spiritual healing is complementary to modern medicine, therapy and training. Often it is the missing link, the wind in the sails that allows healing, recovery and training to rapidly progress. Shamans employ the concept of shamanic consciousness and consistently use connections with the Earth, spirit animals, guides etc. Essentially all these manifestations are based on our long-forgotten connections with our planet and our ancestors, connections which are being recognized and strengthened once more by those practicing shamanism in modern society today.
Shamans believe that when a person suffers from a physical or psychological trauma a part or parts of the soul splits off and no longer contributes to the person’s whole being. Instead, it remains fixed in the event, but in non-ordinary reality. This dissociation is called soul loss, and it often results in loss of memory, or a feeling of incompleteness. This disengagement makes it easier to survive traumas such as accidents, abuse, or emotional disturbances. Children can suffer soul loss from events that are traumatic to them, but may seem trivial to adults. Soul loss can also occur when another person “holds” onto a part of us, and does not let go (for example, an old lover).
Once the traumatic event is over, complete healing can occur when the soul part(s) that is missing is returned. The shaman facilities this event by journeying into non-ordinary reality and, with the help of spirit, finds the missing soul parts and returns them back home. This is followed by a period of integration, where the client gets to know the returned soul part(s) again, and together they work to heal the old wounds.
